Audition Requirements

The Music Enrichment Program offers four levels of orchestras.
Before registering in the orchestra program, you must first successfully complete an audition so you are placed in the appropriate level.
All auditions are held at the MEP office.

2019/20 Audition dates for Orchestra Levels 1, 2 & 3 *
Thursday, June 6th (5 pm – 9 pm)
Thursday, June 13th (5 pm – 9 pm)
Thursday, September 9th (5 pm – 9 pm)

If you were registered in Orchestra Level 1, 2 or 3 for the 2018-19 season and wish to remain in that level you do not need to audition again.


2019/20 Audition dates for Singing Strings

Monday, June 3rd (4 pm – 9 pm)
Wednesday, June 5th (4 pm – 9 pm)


* Please Note:
Individuals who wish to audition must be enrolled in either private or MEP class lessons.
Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Program Coordinator.

The requirements are as follows:

Level 1

• Ability to recognize open strings and use all 4 fingers
• Knowledge of basic rhythms
• Ability to play a one octave scale
• Must play a piece of own choosing
• Ability to sight read at appropriate level

Level 2

• Ability to play a 2 octave scale in first position
• Recognition of key signatures for C,G,D,A
• Ability to use different parts of the bow, including slurs (minimum 2 per bow)
• Must play a piece of own choosing
• Ability to sight read at appropriate level

Level 3

• Ability to play at RCM level 3
• Ability to play a 2 octave major and minor scale of own choosing
• Ability to use different parts of the bow: slur of up to 4 per bow, staccato, spiccato
• Must play a piece of own choosing
• Ability to sight read at appropriate level

Singing Strings

• Must play one piece with contrasting sections, or two pieces (one fast and one slow), of own choosing
• Ability to sight read at appropriate level (sight reading will be provided)
